Arrest Warrants Deal Blow to Improved Lebanese-Syrian Relations Lebanese-Syrian relations have suffered a major setback that could bring ties between the two countries back to tensions that prevailed in the past years. Lebanese-Syrian relations have been improving since Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri visited Syria for the first time in December 2009 on what the local media dubbed his "historic reconciliation" with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose country has been blamed for the 2005 assassination of Hariri''s father, former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Since he took office in November, Hariri has visited Syria five times, forging what he calls "a special relationship" with Assad and opening "a new page" in bilateral relations, strained following the assassination of Hariri's father. The Western-backed, anti-Syrian March 14 coalition has accused Syria of responsibility for Hariri's killing, a charge Damascus has repeatedly denied.
