Description

Syria reaped last year the fruits of its resolute and stubborn foreign policies and diplomacy which helped it overcome unprecedented pressures and challenges that it had confronted in previous years. For Syria, 2009 was a year of political success in every sense and on all fronts. It has significantly improved its regional and international standing, it managed to extricate itself from its isolation internationally and in the Arab world, and positioned itself as an influential regional power which cannot be disregarded in any future settlement in the region. According to columnist Ibrahim Hmeide of pan-Arab daily AL HAYAT (Jan. 28), the Syrian regime has become self-confident and certain of the effectiveness of its policy of "resoluteness" after years of "formidable challenges." Until 2008, President Bashar al-Assad's Syria seemed to be a pariah state. It had been isolated by the West and by some Arab countries, and was under international pressure that spiked following the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri in February 2005. Syria then experienced a highly humiliating retreat of its military forces from Lebanon.
