Description

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman traveled to Damascus this week for a summit meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad as relations between the two neighboring countries continue to steadily improve following years of tensions. The June 15 meeting, the third between the two presidents since 2008, came against the backdrop of major developments in the region that require high-level coordination of the two countries' policies to face regional challenges, namely Israeli threats to their countries. Israeli accusations in April that Syria was supplying the powerful Iranian-backed militant Hizbullah group with sophisticated long-range Scud missiles heightened fears of a possible Israeli attack on Lebanon and Syria. Syrian and Lebanese officials have denied the missile allegations. The Suleiman-Assad meeting also came less than a week after the UN Security Council voted to impose new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. Resolution 1929, passed on June 9, aims to persuade Tehran to curb its suspect nuclear program by widening military and financial sanctions. A total of 12 states voted in favor. Turkey and Brazil voted against the resolution, with Lebanon abstaining from voting.
